We all want to be told we are talented. We want to be told that there is something special, unique, and worthwhile about us. This is true whether we are aspiring actors, prestigious surgeons, or writers… on Medium. In this time, when competition makes it harder than ever to stand out from the crowd, the need to prove our worth is only spurred on by social media where there is always one post right around the corner to tell us what we don’t have and what we should want. The algorithm is the carrot and our insecurities are the stick.

This contemporary desire to succeed and be recognized for it is maybe why this season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story has hit a chord with me. I’ve been a fan for a long time, but this season has hit different. Maybe it was just reassuring to have a pre-pandemic staple bring back some sense of the before times, but more so, this season of American Horror Story has been unique. While it has had its fair share of surprise kills and twists that require a healthy suspension of disbelief, the overarching development of the characters and story has held my imagination tighter and more intimately than any season before.
